16 Personality Types of The Lord of the Rings Characters
Frodo Baggins: INFP
Frodo is the quintessential INFP. Frodo is a sensitive, introspective soul who lives mainly in his own head. He’s kind-hearted and compassionate, always ready to help others, even if it means putting himself in danger. This is evidenced by his willingness to journey through Middle Earth to destroy the One Ring. INFPs are often drawn to fantasy and fiction, as they provide a rich inner landscape for them to explore. This is certainly true of Frodo, who seems quite content living in his home of the Shire until he’s thrust into adventure. He’s also a bit of a dreamer, often getting lost in his own thoughts and daydreams.
Aragorn: INFJ
Aragorn is an INFJ. He’s a natural leader, but he’s also introspective and reserved. He’s highly attuned to the needs of others and is always ready to lend a helping hand. He has a strong moral compass and is always fighting for what he believes is right, even if it means going against the grain. This is why he joined the Fellowship and helped Frodo destroy the ring. INFJs use their intuitive and strategic personalities to guide others toward the greater good. Aragorn is a perfect example of this.
Gandalf the White: INTJ
Gandalf is an INTJ. He’s a wise and knowledgeable wizard who is always thinking several steps ahead, like a typical INTJ. He’s strategic and analytical, always looking for ways to solve problems. Gandalf is also a bit of a lone wolf. This is likely because he knows that he’s the best person for the job and doesn’t want to burden others with his responsibilities. Gandalf is incredibly intuitive and he knew Frodo was the right person to destroy the One Ring, even when Frodo didn’t know it himself.
Sauron: ENTJ
Sauron is the ultimate evil ENTJ. He’s manipulative, power-hungry, and always looking for ways to increase his control over Middle Earth. Sauron is also highly Intelligent and he uses this to his advantage. He’s always several steps ahead of his opponents and he knows how to use people to get what he wants. Unhealthy ENTJs are also known for being tyrannical and oppressive. This is certainly true of Sauron, who enslaved the races of Middle Earth and tried to destroy all that was good in the world.
Samwise Gamgee: ISFJ
Samwise Gamgee is an ISFJ. ISFJs are gentle, compassionate people who want to do their best to help others. They are typically very loyal friends and family members. Samwise perfectly embodies these personality traits. He is always ready to help Frodo, even when it means putting himself in danger. He is also fiercely loyal to the people he cares about and is always quick to defend them. Samwise knew he was embarking on a dangerous journey with Frodo, but he was willing to go anyway because he wanted to help his friend. This selfless act is a perfect example of an ISFJ personality type.
Legolas: ISFP
Legolas is an ISFP. He is a creative and compassionate person who lives in the moment. He is very gentle and easy-going, but he is also fiercely independent. Legolas went against the wish of the elves and decided to join the Fellowship, even though he knew it would be a dangerous journey. ISFPs are also very in touch with the physical world and they are highly practical. This can be seen with Legolas. He is a skilled archer and fighter. He is very brave and is always willing to stand up for what he believes in.
Gimli: ESTP
Gimli is an ESTP. He is a bold and fearless person who loves adventure. He is always up for a challenge and loves to take risks. Gimli is also very outgoing and sociable. He is the life of the party and loves to make people laugh – he is always ready with a witty remark. ESTPs are also very spontaneous and impulsive. They live in the moment and they will give anything a go. Gimli particularly loves a fight – any excuse to throw his ax about. Gimli once exclaimed, “Certainty of death. Small chance of success.” which is about as ESTP as it gets!
Galadriel: INFJ
Galadriel is an INFJ. INFJs are notoriously mystical. As a first-age elf, Galadriel has lived through many years and seen much of the world. She is wise beyond her years, and her experience gives her a deep understanding of the ways of magic and the natural world. Galadriel is also a gifted seer. She often has prophetic dreams, and she is able to read the signs and omens in the world around her. As a typical INFJ, Galadriel is a kind and compassionate woman. She is always willing to help those in need, and she has a deep respect for all life. She was eager to help the Fellowship and she gave each of the hobbits a gift they all would need in their most desperate hour. Galadriel is an enigma. She is calm and serene, but she also has a deep well of power and strength, just like an INFJ.
Saruman the White: INTJ
Saruman the White was an unhealthy INTJ. He was so unhealthy that he turned to the Dark Side. Saruman was constantly thinking about power and control. He was obsessed with being the most powerful wizard in Middle-earth, and he was willing to do whatever it took to achieve that goal. This led him to make some very poor decisions, such as allying himself with Sauron, the Dark Lord of Mordor. Saruman’s unhealthy obsession with power and control ultimately led to his downfall. He was defeated by Gandalf, who is a much healthier INTJ. Gandalf is wiser and more level-headed than Saruman.
Gollum: ENTJ
Gollum was an unhealthy ENTJ. He was obsessed with power and control, and he let his dark side take over. He was manipulative, selfish, and greedy. He was also paranoid, suspicious, and violent. Evil ENTJs can be found in damp caves. They usually lurk in the shadows, waiting to spring their trap, exactly like Gollum. He was obsessed with getting the Ring back, and he was willing to do whatever it took to get it. That’s what an unhealthy ENTJ is like. They’re obsessed with their cause, and they’ll do whatever it takes to achieve it.
Smeagol: ISFP
Smeagol was an ISFP. He was the exact opposite personality type of Gollum, who was an ENTJ. ISFPs can be overly trusting and naive, while unhealthy ENTJs are paranoid and always looking for ways to take advantage of others. Smeagol was a gentle person who just wanted to be loved, while Gollum is a scheming mastermind who will do whatever it takes to get what he wants. Gollum was always nasty to Smeagol for being kind to the hobbits and for not getting the ring. ISFPs are also known for their love of nature, which was seen with Smeagol when he was a hobbit and his contentedness in fishing all day. In the end, Gollum’s power-hungry personality took over and this was his downfall.
Boromir: ESTJ
Boromir was an ESTJ. He was a born leader and had a strong sense of duty. He was confident and assertive, and always put the needs of others first. He was also quite impulsive and sometimes acted without thinking things through. Boromir was an excellent strategist and warrior and was always able to inspire those around him. He was bound by duty and honor, and always did what he thought was right, even if it meant making the hard choices. Boromir was a loyal friend and an excellent leader.
Arwen: INFP
Arwen is an INFP. She is gentle, compassionate, and always puts others before herself. She is fiercely loyal to her family and friends, and she would do anything to protect them. Even though she is an Elf, she has a deep understanding of human nature and is able to empathize with them. INFPs are idealistic and often have a strong sense of justice. Arwen is no exception. She sacrifices her immortality for Aragorn, even though she knows it will mean her own death. She does this because she loves him and would rather live a mortal life by his side.. Arwen is the perfect example of an INFP’s selfless love and compassion.
Meriadoc Brandybuck, AKA Merry: ENTP
Meriadoc Brandybuck, AKA Merry, is an ENTP. He’s loyal, daring, and resourceful – not to mention, he’s got a great sense of humor. Merry is intuitive and grasps the importance of the journey to destroy the Ring. Merry wants to help Frodo and fight as he appreciates that there won’t be a Shire to return to if they don’t complete their task, something that Pippin fails to understand. Merry is also not afraid to voice his opinion, even if it means getting into arguments with other members of the Fellowship.
Peregrin Took, AKA Pippin: ESFP
Peregrin Took, AKA Pippin, is an ESFP. Pippin is all about having a good time. He loves food, music, and parties and is always up for a good adventure. He’s also a bit of a goofball, but that just makes him more lovable. ESFPs are known for being spontaneous and fun-loving, and Pippin definitely embodies those qualities. He lives in the present, which sometimes means he’s not the best at appreciating there is a time and place for things. This can sometimes get him into trouble, but Pippin always means well and he has a good heart. Pippin struggles to grasp the seriousness of the journey through Middle-Earth compared to Merry, who is much better at seeing the bigger picture.
Faramir: INFP
Faramir was an INFP personality type. He was gentle, idealistic, and highly sensitive. He was also quite introspective and prone to daydreaming. He was a loyal friend and an excellent leader. He always strived to see the best in people and looked for the good in every situation. He was a peacemaker and often tried to avoid conflict. Faramir was extremely close to his brother Boromir and was devastated when he died. He blamed himself for Boromir’s death and felt a great deal of guilt. Despite all of this, Faramir was a brave and courageous man who was willing to sacrifice himself for others. He was truly selfless and had a heart of gold.
Bilbo Baggins: ISFJ

He was content to live a simple life in his beloved Shire, and he was always there for his friends and family when they needed him. In ‘The Hobbit’, even though he wasn’t the bravest of Hobbits, he went on an adventure with Thorin and Company because he knew it was the right thing to do.
